Wesley Snipes is staying in jail. That is the latest information available about the star's many appeals about his conviction on income tax evasion. Snipes began serving his three-year term in December of last year.
Many people believe the Snipes case is just another example of celebrities who think they are above it all. So what if he didn't pay taxes? Lindsay Lohan is resting comfortably at home for what started out as grand theft of an expensive necklace. The charges were later dropped to a misdemeanor to allow her to avoid jail time once again. Not too many years ago, Winona Ryder got a similar slap on the wrist for stealing clothes from a boutique. Though she could have easily paid for her haul, she chose not to and got away with it.
It seems that larceny is a pre-requisite to becoming a Hollywood star so why should Wesley Snipes be any different? The answer is simple it would seem. It's okay to steal from private citizens. The law will allow for that. However, stealing from Uncle Sam is forbidden. That was the mistake that Snipes made and now he's got to pay for it.
Snipes got indicted and convicted on three charges of income tax evasion way back in 2008. Yet, he was able to stay out of jail for two more years by exhausting every appeal known to the law. Finally, last year one judge had enough and forced him to start serving his sentence at a Pennsylvania facility, the McKean Federal Correctional Institute.
While McKean's is a minimum security facility, it isn't a walk in the park. Prisoners get up at 6:30 each morning and work at a job for at least seven hours a day. In return, they make less than 40 cents per hour. Probably the worst of it is that the facility doesn't authorize conjugal visits. Prisoners and visitors may share a kiss but that's all.
While it makes sense that Snipes might want out of prison, the fact remains that he wouldn't be there at all if he'd just paid his taxes. The average citizen wouldn't catch a break for breaking the law, so there is no reason the talented actor should either. Besides, Wesley Snipes never serve the complete term. The most he will likely serve is 26 months. Chances are good, he might not even see that much time. So may he should just suck it up. At this point, he's going to have earn back the trust and goodwill of his fans and complaining about justice isn't the way to start.
