Republican Michele Bachmann unwittingly likened herself to a notorious American serial killer at the launch of her U.S. presidential campaign in her hometown, on Monday.
Ms. Bachmann told Fox News that she shares commonalities with Waterloo’s own John Wayne, failing to realize the John Wayne of Waterloo, Iowa is not the iconic movie star, but the serial killer John Wayne Gacy.
“Well what I want them to know is just like John Wayne was from Waterloo, Iowa, that’s the kind of spirit that I have, too,” Ms. Bachmann said. “It’s embracing America. It’s sacrificing for America.” (Watch the clip below).
The quintessential American movie hero was actually born about 250 km southwest of Waterloo, in Winterset, Iowa.
The serial killer dubbed the “Killer Clown,” however, lived and worked for a short time in Ms. Bachmann’s hometown, even receiving an 18-month prison sentence for an attempted sexual assault in the area, The Washington Times reports. He raped and murdered 33 teenage boys and young men between 1972 and 1978. He was executed in 1994.
