Google is shutting down its medical records platform, Google Health.
Google Health competed with Microsoft HealthVault.
Both companies wanted to get into the business of electronic health records and giving doctors, hospitals and patients a place to store their medical information in the cloud.
"When we launched Google Health, our goal was to create a service that would give people access to their personal health and wellness information," Google said in a Friday blog post by Aaron Brown, Senior Product Manager for Google Health and Bill Weihl, Green Energy Czar. "Now, with a few years of experience, we've observed that Google Health is not having the broad impact that we hoped it would."
The company said only a small number of people, tech-savvy patients and fitness enthusiasts, used the service. The site will stay up until Jan. 1, 2012 and Google will make the data available for download until Jan. 1, 2013.
Google is also shutting down Google PowerMeter, another product that competes with Microsoft. PowerMeter is a tool to track energy usage.
Microsoft makes the competing product Hohm. "Our efforts have not scaled as quickly as we would like, so we are retiring the service," Brown and Weihl wrote in the blog post.
PowerMeter will be around until Sept. 16.
