Happy Babies: Ladybird Baby Touch (iPhone and iPad)
Penguin Books
Price £1.79
Score: 5/5
There are lots of excellent iPad apps for children and Penguin has made some of the best. Peppa Pig Stars and Spot Goes to School have both been big hits with my toddler, as has Peekaboo: Ladybird Baby Touch, to which this app is a sequel.
As with its predecessor, Happy Babies has four interactive animations all based around the same theme. This time the theme is babies and the four animations - wild babies, water babies, farm babies and flying babies - each feature a range of animals with their babies.
The graphics are brightly coloured, the animals are drawn with a cartoony humour and move on and off screen as the straightforward question-and-answer narration progresses. It’s ideal for holding a small child’s attention. The ‘shockwaves’ that appear when the screen is tapped are a nice touch, allowing for a little bit of feedback and encouragement to tap more. Children will enjoy copying the questions and guessing where the babies are hiding and, if my own child is representative, will happily do so time and time again without getting bored.
Happy Babies is a well-made app that offers plenty to occupy a small child while also seeming quite simple and minimal. It’s good value too, particularly since £1.79 gets you the iPhone and iPad apps. It looks lovely on the large screen of the iPad but is also worth keeping handy on your iPhone for those moments when your child needs entertaining.
