Hackers claim to have stolen the entire 2011 census and that they will publish it online. But what personal data does it contain? The once-a-decade compulsory survey was conducted in March by the US defence contractor Lockheed Martin. The data collected included:
- Every residential address in the UK
- The full names of everyone living at every address
- Previous addresses
- The date of birth of all occupants - Marital statuses
- Ethnicity
- General health
- Educational qualifications
- Occupations
- Employers' addresses
The data will be held by the government for 100 years before being released to historians and genealogists.
According to the ONS website the data is secured with "leading security technologies, including industry-standard SSL encryption software, when processing sensitive information to safeguard your data and we apply strict security standards to prevent any unauthorised access to it".
