World of Warcraft - World of Warcraft MMORPG goes free for new users
World of Warcraft, the massively multi-player online roleplaying game (MMORPG), used to cost £8.99 per month but the new system will allow players free access up to level 20 of the game.
Blizzard Entertainment, which makes World of Warcraft, used to allow new players a 14-day trial period but this has now been replaced by the new system of limited free access. The new system, known as World of Warcraft Starter Edition, will allow players to take their character as far as level 20 but places some limitations on how much gold they can have and their ability to trade with other players.
Launched in 2004, World of Warcraft has more than 11 million subscribers worldwide, making it the most popular MMORPG. Whether the new system boosts the game’s subscriber base remains to be seen.
As well as announcing the new system, Blizzard also released a patch for the game, called Rage of the Firelands, which brings new quests for players and tweaks the game’s user interface.
Earlier this week, Sony announced that it was closing one of its MMORPGs, Star Wars Galaxies, because it felt like “the right time for the game to end”. Players have organised a petition to ask Sony to change its mind.
