The device, codenamed “Sea Ray”, was apparently unveiled by Nokia’s Chief Executive Stephen Elop in front of an audience who were forbidden to take pictures. A YouTube clip includes Mr Elop asking a crowd of people to "put away their cameras" so they can see something "super confidential".
The new handset appears to be very similar to Nokia’s newly announced N9 phone. Using a new but already abandoned phone operating system called MeeGo, the N9 features an all-glass front and an 8mp camera. The new Windows Phone version adds an extra button, presumably for the camera, and places the LED flash in a different location. IN the leaked pictures, it is also running the yet-to-be-released version of Windows Phone that is codenamed “Mango”.
Online commenters were quick to suggest that the “leak” was an intentional ploy to build anticipation for Nokia’s first Windows Phone devices. The official unveiling is expected to be at Nokia World in London in October.
A Nokia spokesman declined to deny that the leaked pictures were authentic. “We can’t comment on market rumour or speculation,” he said. “However, we’re extremely pleased on the progress we’re making on a Nokia with Windows device and we can’t wait to share it with everybody.”
